A fun story came out today over at CNN, where it was revealed that a previously unknown species of Catfish have officially been named after Greedo! Here’s a bit from the article over at CNN as to why this species of Catfish is being named after the bounty hunter, as well as an image of the fish:
A previously unknown species of catfish has been named for the wide-eyed, puckered-mouth “Star Wars” character it resembles.
Its scientific name is Peckoltia greedoi, and it is known for its large, dark eyes, puckered lips and protruding bristles.
“I think it was the whole package that evoked Greedo, but particularly the eyes and the underslung mouth,” said Jonathan Armbruster, biological sciences professor and curator of fishes at the Auburn University Museum of Natural History.
“As a 7-year-old kid, I watched “Star Wars” in the theater, and it was a life-changing experience for me,” said Armbruster. “I became a lifelong fan, and I now share that with my son. Greedo has always been a personal favorite of mine.”
While it may make more sense to hardcore “Star Wars” fans to name the Catfish after Greedo’s actual species (That of course being a Rodian) it’s still pretty cool to have a species of fish named after a Star Wars character!
