Rogue One Details From Celebration Anaheim!

Yesterday at the “Conversations with Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank” panel, though Josh Trank couldn’t make it due to being sick, lots of information got revealed for “Rogue One,” including the first teaser trailer! I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at the panel, so here are all the new details that got revealed for “Rogue One”!

First off, Lucasfilm’s Kiri Hart revealed that the official title for “Star Wars” movies not part of the main episodic films will be called “Star Wars Anthology Films.”

“Rogue One” will be about a group of resistance fighters who will go on a mission to steal the Deathstar plans.

“Rogue One” will take place between episodes III & IV, but will be closer to A New Hope’s timeline.

“Rogue One” will focus on galaxy without Jedi, and how their absence will affect the group of resistance fighters struggle against the Empire.

Felicity Jones will play a Rebel solider.

“Rogue One” will shoot in the U.K. and all over the world, but Gareth Edwards did not want to reveal those locations yet.

Some of the production crew revealed for “Rogue One” from the panel and from StarWars.com are: Director of photography Greig Fraser (Foxcatcher, Zero Dark Thirty), special effects supervisor Neil Corbould (Gravity, Gladiator), casting director Jina Jay (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, War Horse), sound designer Chris Scarabosio (There Will be Blood, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith),  co-production designers Doug Chiang (Star Wars Episodes I & II) and Neil Lamont (supervising art director for the Harry Potter series, Edge of Tomorrow), stunt coordinator Rob Inch (World War Z, Captain America: The First Avenger), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (Prometheus) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the Harry Potter series, Saving Private Ryan), and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for Kingsman: The Secret Service, Jupiter Ascending).

Of course the highlights of the panel were the concept art and teaser trailer shown. Unfortunately both have not been made available online officially yet, and probably won’t be for a while, but here is a brief description of both:

The concept art shown is the one we’ve heard about before when Bob Iger revealed titled of “Rogue One.” It showed a group of solders running in the rain at night with some new ships flying over them. The design of the soldiers in the concept art reminded me of the uniforms the Rebels had in the Battle of Hoth, and looked very cool.

The teaser shown was brief, but was enough to get everyone in the room pumped up! It starts with an aerial view of a forest, which reminded me of the locations we see in “Jurassic Park” movies, and as the camera starts panning up, we hear the familiar voice of Obi Wan Kenobi saying the famous words he told to Luke in “A New Hope” about how the Jedi were once the guardians of peace and justice. And as he begins to say, “Before the Dark times. Before the Empire.” We hear the sound of a TIE fighter and see it fly by, as we then get the reveal of the first Deathstar in the distance of the planet’s sky! The teaser then ends with the official logo of “Rogue One,” with the words “Star Wars” above it, and “Anthology” below. There was also some audio playing over the logo of com chatter between solders that felt like nothing we’ve heard from a “Star Wars” movie before, but really added to the tone of what the movie is going to be like.

During the panel you can tell how excited Gareth Edwards is for this movie, saying “I couldn’t sit in a cinema and know that someone else made this film,” which just fed into everyone else’s excitement for it.

“Rogue One” is looking like a totally different “Star Wars” movie, and that has me very excited. Everything said and shown about the movie during the panel has me assured that these “Star Wars Anthology Films” are going to be fantastic additions to the main episode movies, and I can’t wait to see them starting on December 16, 2016!
