Today’s “Rogue One” story from Entertainment Weekly’s coverage all week focuses on the new droid played by Alan Tudyk, K-2SO.
While at Celebration Europe, it was revealed that K-2SO would be the droid of Cassian Andor, and that he would be the one to clear his programing and bring him to the side of the rebellion. But Entertainment Weekly’s story today sheds a little more light on the new droid, as Alan Tudyk talks to them about the droid’s personality, his relationship with Cassian, seeing other K2 models still with the Empire, and how he is going to voice K-2SO:
“He has no filter. There was an old line, it’s not in there anymore…. I don’t think I can say it… I can’t say what I want to say, but Kaytoo can say what he wants. He can say insulting things very casually if he thinks they’re true.”
“He was a security droid in the Empire and they sort of enforce whatever needs to be enforced. They are imposing. He’s 7-foot-1, and follows orders pretty well. If you’re asked to be detained, he can detain you. They stand guard, and if somebody doesn’t mind them, they’ll…” Tudyk laughs. “They’ll enforce the sh– out of [people.]
“They’ve been around. They’ve been together for a while, a couple years. He wants what Cassian wants. He loves Cassian, because he freed him. It’s also more paternal in that [Cassian] gave him life and took away the bonds of his programming.”
“You do meet other Kaytoos and they don’t have as much free will. We see them, and … Yeah, that’s not him.”
“I have an English accent. I feel like a lot of the Imperial characters are English, and the Rebels tended to be like Han Solo, you think of the Americans. And because he was a droid, it made sense that it would be more of a proper accent.”
K-2SO is sounding like he’ll definitely be one of the more entertaining characters in “Rogue One,” but I’m really excited to see more of his relationship with Cassian in the movie after reading this article and learning it will be more of a paternal relationship.
You can check out the full article over at Entertainment Weekly, and hopefully we will see and hear more from K-2SO in the new trailer tomorrow!
