As for some of the new details about “The Last Jedi” in Vanity Fair’s article, we did learn the names of some new characters and a new planet. As far as characters go, we now know that Lara Dern will be playing o, a prominent officer in the Resistance, and Benicio Del Toro will be playing an unnamed “shady character” in the film, but who everyone on set calls DJ. Rian Johnson does say, “You’ll see—there’s a reason why we call him DJ.” Another new character revealed is a Resistance solider named Paige, played by actress Veronica Ngo, who is the sister of Rose, and who was described as being trained by Poe Dameron on how to be a gunner.
Another new detail learned was the name of a new planet we’ll be visiting called
, which is home to a Casino that brings out some of the galaxy’s most luxurious and wealthy beings, and where Finn and Rose will travel to on their mission for the Resistance. Rian Johnson describes the planet as “a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief. I was thinking, O.K., let’s go ultra-glamour. Let’s create a playground, basically, for rich assholes.”Rian Johnson also provided a few new details on Ahch-To, and confirms what Han Solo said in “The Force Awakens,” in that it is home to the first Jedi Temple. Rian Johnson says they “duplicated the beehive-shaped huts where the monks lived on Skellig and made a kind of little Jedi village out of them.” He also revealed that during his time on Ahch-To Luke has been living with an indigenous race of caretaker creatures, but would only describe them as “not Ewoks.” In regards to Rey’s training on Ahch-To, Rian Johnson says that “There’s a training element to it, but it’s not exactly what you would expect.”
While that’s mainly it for the new details revealed about “The Last Jedi,” be sure to check out the full article over at Vanity Fair for more great images, as well as some great interviews from the cast and crew about Carrie Fisher.
