The Hollywood Reporter has made a pretty big report today, as they are saying that an Obi Wan Kenobi standalone film is now in the early stages of development over at Lucasfilm, and has a director attached to it.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry (“Billy Elliot” and “The Hours”) is in early talks to helm the Obi Wan standalone film. Their sources say talks are at the earliest of stages, and that the film has no script yet. They also say if the deal with Stephen Daldry gets done, he would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm.
The Hollywood Reporter had no information on whether Ewan McGregor will star in the upcoming Obi Wan film, but I think it will be safe bet to assume he will be part of the project. The article also mentioned that Lucasfilm is also looking at developing standalone movies for Yoda and Boba Fett, but it will probably be a long while before we hear anything officially about those projects.
While of course this not official confirmation from Lucasfilm, we’ve heard rumors about an Obi Wan standalone film for so long now, a report like this from a very reputable outlet like The Hollywood Reporter makes it very likely that this film is next on Lucasfilm’s docket, and I couldn’t be happier!
The Obi-Wan Kenobi movie may come out in 2020. Sounds far but at least it’s happening. Looking forward to seeing Ewan McGregor in Star Wars once again.
