While doing a press event in Japan, Rian Johnson was asked about his thoughts on directing Episode IX now that Colin Trevorrow is no longer on the project, and as of right now, it sounds like he is not really putting himself in consideration to direct it. His answer to that question was, “It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it.”
You can check out out his full response to that question in the video above from Oricon at the 2:25 mark.
While it seems like Rian Johnson is making it known that he will not be returning to direct Episode IX, it does sound like he really just wants to focus on finishing “The Last Jedi” right now, and as we know, anything can still happen where his mindset can change once his movie is finished.
But the discussion wasn’t all about Episode IX at that press event, as Rian Johnson did share some new details about Episode VIII as well. He went on to reveal that the film is pretty much done, and just has to return to L.A. for a few more days to work on it.
He also revealed that there will be new celebrity cameo in “The Last Jedi,” saying that actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who worked with Rian Johnson on the film “Looper,” will have quick voice cameo in the film.
Be sure to check out the full video, as Rian Johnson also shares his memories of working with Carrie Fisher on “The Last Jedi.”
