Gareth Edwards Explains The Meaning Of The Title Rogue One

Some cool bit of information has been revealed by Empire magazine in their Rogue One issue today, as they had a chance to talk to Director Gareth Edwards and ask him just why the movie is called “Rogue One.”

Here is what Gareth Edwards told Empire about the title, and you may be surprised as to the meaning of the movie being titled “Rogue One”:

“I’d been thinking about it. What does it mean? ‘Rogue One’ is a military call sign to some extent,” he adds, referring to Red Squadron during the Battle of Yavin, “but this is the first film that’s gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it’s the ‘rogue’ one, you know?”

Referring to Jyn, Gareth says, “It’s kind of describing her as well in a similar way. It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice.”

Remember when the title was first announced, and a lot of us thought “Rogue One” was referring to Rogue Squadron? We’ve come a long way since then, and while the title may yet prove to be some kind of precursor to Rogue Squadron when we actually see the movie, it sounds like that wasn’t the main intent on when they were coming up with the title.

For the full article, and if the title refers to Gareth Edwards himself, be sure to head on over to Empire.
