Vanity Fair has followed up their main article on “The Last Jedi” with another one that features some more new details about the film, straight from Lucasfilm’s Pablo Hidalgo.
In this new article, Pablo shares some new information on Laura Dern’s character Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, the citizens on Canto Bight, and the reason for showing Captain Phasma without her helmet!
On Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo–
With her different hair color that we’ve seen in “Star Wars” for most human characters, Pablo confirms she is human, and says her hair color is the way it is because of her “cultural background.”
On the citizens of Canto Bight-
“What we’re going to see in The Last Jedi are some people who have managed to carve out a life for themselves where they can live apart from the galactic struggle. They found a way to live above it or beyond it. There’s a class of wealthy that have helped build all sorts of loopholes in society that will always ensure that they’ll survive or even thrive no matter what else is happening out there.”
On showing Captain Phasma without her helmet, and her new weapon-
“I think a big part of the allure of her character was just wondering what might be underneath. It was only relatively recently that we wanted to commit to the idea that there was a human under there. The Force Awakens left that question, but as we got further into Last Jedi, as well as some other stories we’re thinking about with Phasma, we had to ask ourselves, ‘All right, do we agree there’s a human under there?’ ”
In regards to Phasma’s new weapon, thhe article says that “Phasma’s accessory is a retractable pole arm that collapses into a smaller, easy to carry form. This weapon has a strong connection to Phasma’s history, which will be explored in a comic-book series out in September. ‘Her background is more low-tech than many would assume.’
Another reveal that came out today has to deal with Supreme Leader Snoke. David Kamp, the writer of the Vanity Fair cover story on “The Last Jedi,” took to Reddit to answer some questions about his article where someone asked if Rian Johnson shared some new information on Snoke, and this is what he said:
“I asked Rian Johnson about Snoke—Who/what is he?—and Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in TLJ. Hmmm.”
While we’ve known we would learn more about Rey in “The Last Jedi,” we have been speculating if Snoke would be another character where some more light would be shed on, but it looks like we’re going to have to wait until Episode IX for Snoke’s big coming out party, which will match up nicely with how Palpatine had such large roles in Episodes III and VI.
It has definitely been a great day learning about all this new info on “The Last Jedi” and seeing those awesome images, and we’re just looking forward to everything Lucasfilm has in store for us in the lead up to it’s release in the coming months!
