The Porgs made a big splash with fans when they were officially revealed in “The Last Jedi” behind-the-scenes video a few weeks ago, but now thanks to Entertainment Weekly’s third article on the film, not only do we get a little more info on what inspired Rian Johnson to create the Porgs, but we learn they aren’t the only new creatures we’ll see on Ahch-To!
Here are the new details and some new images from Entertainment Weekly not only on the Porgs, but a new alien species called the Caretakers:
In regards to what inspired Rian Johnson to create the Porgs, he says, “If you go to Skellig at the right time of year, it’s just covered in puffins, and they’re the most adorable things in the world. So when I was first scouting there, I saw these guys, and I was like, oh, these are part of the island. And so the Porgs are in that realm.”
Now for the new alien creatures that I find really fascinating, the Caretakers. Rian Johnson says, “They’re kind of these sort of fish-bird type aliens who live on the island. They’ve been there for thousands of years, and they essentially keep up the structures on the island.”
“They’re all female, and I wanted them to feel like a remote sort of little nunnery. Neal Scanlan’s crew designed them, and costume designer Michael Kaplan made these working clothes that also reflected sort of a nun-like, spartan sort of existence.”
It is revealed that they can also communicate with Luke in “a blubbery sort of Scottish fish talk” Johnson says, but they’re not thrilled having him around. Johnson says they “tolerate” his presence.
