When we saw “The Last Jedi” trailer last month, one of my favorite shots from it was that of those Crystal Foxes running on the planet Crait. Well now in one of their articles for their new “The Last Jedi” issue, Entertainment Weekly has provided us with the first details on these awesome new creatures.
It has been revealed that the creature is called a Vulptex, and a pack of them are called Vulptices. They live in the salt flats of Crait, and burrow themselves deep within the underground of the rebel hideout that will be used by the Resistance in the film, and are free to roam about within it.
Entertainment Weekly also got to talk to Neal Scanlan from the Lucasfilm creature shop about the Vulptices:
“The idea is that these wonderful sort of feral creatures had lived on this planet and had consumed the planet’s surface, and as such had become crystalline,” Scanlan says. The designers took inspiration from “crystal glass chandeliers and the sort of luminosity and elements of refraction” they create.
“They live within the burrows and within the tunnels beneath the planet,” Scanlan says. “So there is a time where their ability to shine within the darkness, should provide a guiding light to our heroes.”
Much like the Loth-Wolves on “Star Wars Rebels,” the Vulptex is quickly becoming one of my favorite new “Star Wars” creatures. They have an amazing and unique look, and their history sounds cool as well. I can’t wait to see them in the film!
