Forest Whitaker Talks Saw Gerrera With Entertainment Weekly

Tonight’s the night we get to see the new “Rogue One” trailer! But to help us get a little more excited for it, today’s Entertainment Weekly story on “Rogue One” focuses on one of the main characters I can’t wait to see in the movie, and hopefully more of in tonight’s trailer. Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera!

In talking with Entertainment Weekly, actor Forest Whitaker talks about Saw’s armored suit, his past and his view on the current stat of the galaxy, his relationship to Jyn, and why we have seen him with two different looks in the first teaser trailer and in recent photos:

“This is his armored suit for flight, but also for maintenance. He’s been through many conflicts and many wars, so it’s also about [repairing] some of the many injuries he’s had. He wears it all the time.”

“I don’t think he’s regretful. I think he really believes that what he has done is right He understands that the universe could be destroyed and worlds could be destroyed if he doesn’t succeed. And he’s one of the only people who will do everything to make sure the Imperial forces don’t.”

On his relationship with Jyn Erso. “He’s really close to her, and they have a very powerful relationship. He’s talking about how you maybe make compromises that may harm people, or may harm the situation, or people may question it, but if you’re doing it for the good, there’s a positive thing about that. But what does it make you become? And how do you change as a person?”

And why we have seen Saw with both a full head of hair, and with a shaved head. “We made some decisions about how the character was progressing. They had a lot of opportunity to make tweaks and different things. You’ll see both.”

Definitely some cool stuff from Forest Whitaker about Saw Gerrera in this article. I’m now more intrigued with just how far back Saw and Jyn’s relationship goes, as it seems like they have known each other for a bit longer than I was anticipating. I’m also glad to hear we’ll see Saw with the two different looks we’ve seen of him, and that change wasn’t just because of re-shoots.

For the full article on Saw Gerrera, be sure to head on over to Entertainment Weekly, where Forest Whitaker teases about some similarities between Saw and Darth Vader!
