A Very Cool Cameo Confirmed In The Force Awakens

Entertainment Weekly has provided some cool information from J.J. Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt while attending a Writers Guild of America screening, where they talk about some voices you might of heard in a particular scene from “The Force Awakens.”

Spoilers Below:

In the scene where Rey touches Luke’s lightsaber and experiences a very cool Force Vision, we hear the familiar voices of Yoda, Luke, and Obi Wan in that sequence. But who did their voices for that Force vision sequence? Well J.J. Abrams provides the answer to that question, and it is a very cool one for fans to hear, especially in the case of Obi Wan!

“The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least aswell as they could.”

“You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ‘Nooo!’ from that moment in Empire. And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey … these are your firststeps. Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”

In regards to Obi Wan saying “Rey” in the vision, Abrams revealed this cool fact: “I said, ‘That’s cool, is that the thing from Ewan McGregor? He said ‘No, we took a line from Alec Guinness saying ‘Afraid.’”

“They cut it, and you hear the performance – he’s saying it the way I would have begged Alec Guinness to have said it. It is so crazy perfect. So when you hear Obi-Wan talk to Rey it is both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor doing the voice.”

I cant tell you how cool it is to know that Ewen McGregor came back and reprises his role as Obi Wan Kenobi, even if it was just his voice in a short sequence!  J.J. Abrams also revealed that Frank Oz recorded new lines for Yoda in that sequence as well, but opted to use previous dialogue of him from “The Empire Strikes Back” instead.

The fact that they got both actors to return for a small cameo in this movie makes me even more hopeful that they may return for a larger role in Episode VIII, where maybe we will actually see them in the form of Force spirits!
